Getting Healthy? Eat a Plant!

Plant Based Foods appear to be taking over! Companies have started to expand into the plant based food market as it appears that more and more people are concerned for their health.

According to an article I read on Good Food Institute, plant-based meat, egg, and dairy products are increasingly competitive with animal products on the key drivers of consumer choice: taste, price, and accessibly. The aftermath is an increase of consumers purchasing plant based options. It is believed that the growth at grocery retailers nationwide outpaced over food growth by more than five times. New SPINS retail sales date released March 3, 2020, shows that grocery sales of plant-based foods that direct replace animal products have grown 29% in the past two years to $5 billion. (1)

Before I educated myself on this, I personally always thought that plant-based meat was the more developed, but in fact, it is plant-based milk, followed by “other plant-based dairy”, then plant-based meat.

Healthy eating is undervalued to most people, just like a lot of undervalued companies in this sector. Demand for plant-based products appear to be creating a multi-billiom dollar revolutions, creating lucrative possiblities. Check out another article I am happy I came across, as it provided me with more perspective and I am hoping it will do the same for you.

As dollar sales of plant-based foods increase significantly, there has been a decrease or growing only modestly of animal foods. Over the past years dollar sales of conventional milk were flat, while dollar sales of conventional yogurt and conventional eggs decreased by 1% to 10%. (1)

Would you believe that over 208 million units of plant-based meat were sold in the past year? Plant-based meat accounts for 2% of all dollar sales for retail packaged meat and approximately 1% of all dollar sales for total retail meat. (1)

We all are aware or should be aware, that to much red meat is not good for you, even a report on an article from Plant Based News Organization, stated “Americans should avoid saturated fat, cholesterol, and red and processed meat.” (2)

It says: “A noteworthy difference from the 2015 Committee report is that whole grains are now identified with almost the same consistency as vegetables and fruits as beneficial for the outcome examined, suggesting that these three plant-based food groups are fundamental constituents of a healthy dietary pattern.” (2)

Over time, studies have show red and processed meat can be associated with numerous conditions like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, colorectal cancer.

According to this article dairy products are the leading source of saturated fat in the American diet and increase the risk of heart disease and other health conditions. “The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee finally got it right by finding that plant-based foods are beneficial for every health condition and that red and processed meat are beneficial for none,” said Susan Levin, who is a director of nutrition education for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
